Tisaraṇa: The Three Refuges (Buddha, Dhamma, Saṅgha)
In traditional practice, this entire formula is chanted to formally declare one's commitment to the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha.
First Recitation (The Primary Declaration)
Pāḷi:
Buddham saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
Dhammaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
Saṅghaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
Dhammaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
Saṅghaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
English:
I go to the Buddha for refuge.
I go to the Dhamma (Teachings) for refuge.
I go to the Saṅgha (Community) for refuge.
I go to the Dhamma (Teachings) for refuge.
I go to the Saṅgha (Community) for refuge.
Second Recitation (Dutiyampi)
The word Dutiyampi means "For the second time." It is chanted to reinforce your intent.
Third Recitation (Tatiyampi)
The word Tatiyampi means "For the third time." It seals the final commitment.
