About This Audio

Tisaraṇa (The Three Refuges)

The Three Refuges (Tisaraṇa) is the traditional Pāḷi recitation formally declaring refuge in the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Saṅgha.

First Recitation (The Primary Declaration)

Pāḷi:
Buddhaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.
Dhammaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.
Saṅghaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.

English Translation:
I go to the Buddha for refuge.
I go to the Dhamma (Teachings) for refuge.
I go to the Saṅgha (Community) for refuge.

Second Recitation (Dutiyampi)

The word "Dutiyampi" means "For the second time." It is chanted to reinforce one's intent.

Pāḷi:
Dutiyampi buddhaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.
Dutiyampi dhammaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.
Dutiyampi saṅghaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.

English Translation:
For the second time, I go to the Buddha for refuge.
For the second time, I go to the Dhamma for refuge.
For the second time, I go to the Saṅgha for refuge.

Third Recitation (Tatiyampi)

The word "Tatiyampi" means "For the third time." It seals the final commitment.

Pāḷi:
Tatiyampi buddhaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.
Tatiyampi dhammaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.
Tatiyampi saṅghaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi.

English Translation:
For the third time, I go to the Buddha for refuge.
For the third time, I go to the Dhamma for refuge.
For the third time, I go to the Saṅgha for refuge.
