🙏 On October 9 (Tuesday), 2018, teachers and students of the Buddhist Society at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Gelugor, Penang gathered to cultivate the Ten Meritorious Deeds, nurturing young minds with Dhamma wisdom and illuminating their lives with wholesome deeds.

The wisdom of the Buddha is not only for adults — it is one of the most precious gifts a child can receive. When children learn to give, observe precepts, meditate, show reverence, serve others, rejoice in others' merits, share merits, listen to Dhamma, teach Dhamma, and uphold right views, they plant seeds not only for themselves but also for their families, society, and the nation.

I. The Meaning of Wholesome Deeds for Children
Wholesome deeds are a child's greatest wealth.

The Buddha taught in the Dhammapada:
"Not a mother, nor a father, nor any other relative can do more for the well-being of one than a rightly-directed mind can."

The best gift parents can give is not wealth or status, but a heart inclined toward goodness and wisdom.

Through the Ten Meritorious Deeds, children learn to:
🌱 Cultivate gratitude — appreciating the kindness of parents, teachers, and society
🌱 Establish right view — discerning good from evil, building a wholesome life direction
🌱 Accumulate good kamma — paving a bright path for their future
🌱 Tame the mind — developing focus and inner peace through meditation

A child with wholesome roots is a blessing to the family and a treasure to the nation.

II. Family: Wholesome Roots Bring Harmony
The family is the foundation of society; children are its future.

When children bring the Dhamma home:
🏠 Filial piety — learning gratitude and respect for parents
🏠 Sibling harmony — learning to share and rejoice in others' happiness
🏠 Reduced conflict — cultivating virtue and right view, avoiding harmful habits

A child who learns the Dhamma is the best catalyst for family harmony.

III. Nation and Society: Wholesome Deeds as Foundation
The prosperity of a nation lies in its talents; the cultivation of talent lies in education.

"When more people practice the Ten Wholesome Deeds, society will become fair, just, harmonious, and kind, with fewer violations of law and social conflicts."

The future leaders of our nation are not far away — they are in today's classrooms. When children in school:
📿 Observe the Five Precepts — refraining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, and intoxicants
📖 Chant and learn Dhamma — purifying the mind with sacred sounds, cultivating mindfulness
🧘 Practice meditation — growing in stillness and awareness
🙏 Offer and serve — developing a sense of responsibility and dedication to others

They become not only better individuals but also:
✅ Good citizens — honest, trustworthy, and helpful
✅ Capable talents — grateful, compassionate, and socially responsible

IV. The Ten Meritorious Deeds and Their Impact on Children

V. Dhammapada Reflection
"If a man does what is good, he should do it again and again; he should take delight in it; the accumulation of merit leads to happiness."
— Dhammapada, Verse 118

Wholesome deeds are not a one-time event but repeated cultivation and continuous accumulation.

May every teacher and student at Universiti Sains Malaysia:
🌺 Carry today's wholesome roots into daily life
